Abstract
Grass-fed livestock are almost all infected with parasites, namely gastrointestinal strongyles. These parasites cause major problems for livestock health and productivity. For decades, farmers have principally fought infections using anthelmintics, but their efficacy has diminished as parasite resistance has increased. To manage pastures in such a way as to prevent and control infections, it is important to understand parasite epidemiology; here, we review some of the key principles. Integrated treatment methods use a dual-faceted approach: pastures are appropriately managed and anthelmintics are selectively given to the animals that need them the most. We present several diagnostic methods, which are currently little used by livestock farmers and veterinarians.
